Do I Need a Website If I Already Have Instagram or Facebook?
I was chatting with the lads at Dunsany Estate recently while working on their new website.
They already had a solid Instagram, beautiful photos, decent engagement, people clearly loved what they were doing. But what made the biggest difference in the end was getting a website built. Something that actually told their story properly, showed the impact of the rewilding, and gave people a simple way to get involved.
The photo above is from a drone shoot we did that day for the website visuals which is probably one of my favourite shots from the whole project.
It got me thinking, loads of small Irish businesses are in the same boat. They're active on socials and doing a great job but still wondering if they actually need a proper website too.
Here’s what I’d say…
You Don’t Fully Own Social Media
You’re building on rented ground.
If Instagram changes its algorithm, or your page gets flagged randomly, or your reach drops (which it will) there’s not much you can do.
Your website is your space. You decide how it looks, what it says, and no one can suddenly take it away.
People Still Google You
Even if someone finds you on social, most of the time they’ll still Google your name.
If you don’t have a website, it can look like you’re not fully set up especially for people over 30 or anyone looking to book something serious.
Having a simple website with your contact details, opening hours, reviews, and a bit about what you do builds trust straight away.
You’re Missing Out on Local Search
If you want to show up when someone searches something like:
“plumber near me”
“Dublin café open now”
“sports physio Malahide”
You’ll need more than a Facebook page.
A website helps you show up on Google, especially when it’s connected to Google My Business and Search Console.
That’s how you get seen by people who are actively looking for what you offer.
A Website Converts Better
Instagram is great for getting interest.
But when someone’s ready to actually book, call, or buy, a website works better.
They can fill out a form, check your FAQs, read reviews, see your work, and make a decision there and then. It’s also more professional if you're quoting for jobs or applying for business listings.
You Look More Legit
Even a one-page site can make a big difference in how people see your business.
You can share your story, show off your work properly, and have your own style and colours. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just clear, clean, and genuinely you.
Final Thought
If you’re running a business, especially a small one in Ireland, having a proper website gives you a solid base. Instagram and Facebook are great, but they work best alongside a website, not instead of one.
If you ever want to chat about getting something simple and affordable set up or even just want a bit of advice feel free to drop me a message or give me a shout.
Enjoy the weekend.
